Pocahotties

Pocahaunted were two girls, Bethany and Amanda, from L.A. who started a band. If you're gonna ask how they got their name, (because apparently everyone does) it came to one of them in a dream. It's some dubby dirty hippy tribal drone kinda thing. They generally put out on Not Not Fun, but they do have one release on Woodsist.

Bethany went on to form Best Coast, leaving Amanda to do her own thing with Pocahaunted. I think Sun Araw joined the band for a little while recently too. Best Coast is currently putting out great pop songs like "The Sun Was High (So Was I)," and Pocahaunted just released Make It Real, one of my favorite albums of the year.

Below are two of the albums they made while they were still together.
Bouns Fun Fact: Josh Klinghoffer(of JohnFrusciante/RHCP fame) was a studio guitarist on Chains.

Woods Family Creeps

I've got a slight obsession with Jeremy Earl lately. For those who don't know he's played under a few different monikers including Woods, Meneguar & Shepherds. All while running the Woodsist label. Woods is putting out a new album this May. It was released early on iTunes, probably due to pesky pirates.

The new album, At Echo Lake, is one of my favorite records of the year. Until you get your hands on it, here's a look at the darker side of Woods: The Woods Family Creeps. "Creeps Collage," "Sleep Sleep Sleep" and "Twisted Tongue" are highlights, not to mention the Woods live staple, "The Creeps."

Mi Ami / Black Eyes

The Black Eyes were some kind of bad ass punk band on Dischord back at the beginning of the 00s. They started sounding kind of like a young Fugazi, and ended make free jazz noise... After two albums the highly experimental punk band called it quits. The members went on to form many different bands, but not until Mi Ami has anything reached the greatness(?) of the Black Eyes.

Mi Ami has crafted a sound that is some blend of tribal, punk, shrieking vocals and way overblown guitar. Wandering between frantic percussion and smooth pulsating grooves, Mi Ami's first album, Watersports, defines a new space for punk music.

Mi Ami is about to put out their second album, Steal Your Face. I've heard it. I like it. I'd recommend checking out the writeup they posted about it on their label's website, along with the album. The statement describing the recording process and the state of music/culture is poignant and compelling; recommended reading.

Fela Kuti

What can I say? Fela was a badass musician and political figure, and father of Femi Kuti. All his albums feature some pretty funky grooves, and I can't say I've come across a bad one yet. Opposite People, the half I prefer, is now packaged with Sorrow Tears and Blood, so I figure why not include both? Enjoy.
